New charity Adferiad recovery hosts Member of the Senedd at their supported living project in Rhyl.

Gareth Davies MS Senedd member for Vale of Clwyd and Shadow Minister for Social Services met with representatives of Adferiad recovery (formally of Hafal) at one of their supported living houses in Rhyl.

Adferiad Recovery is a new Welsh charity launched on 1st April 2021 which joins together four charities in Wales – Hafal, Adferiad Recovery, CAIS and WCADA – to create a dynamic new organisation which will provide vital recovery support for vulnerable people in Wales and their families and carers.

Gareth spoke with the team on the set up of their supported living houses and of the issues faced by those the charity helps such as residents of their project, local people who have mental health or substance issues and their affected families and carers, he noted:

“I’d like to thank Adferiad Recovery for their work on housing projects such as this and their role across the community helping people in need of support on their journey to independent living”.

“Having previously worked within this sector and supported people with complex mental health issues, I have a first-hand understanding of the barriers and challenges that a person may encounter, it is brilliant to see the support from a service such as this to help people when this does arise and in my role as Shadow Minister for Social Services and Vale of Clwyd MS I want to work with such organisations and the relevant services both locally and across Wales to reduce such barriers, for example access to affordable accommodation which has been highlighted to me as a current pressing issue in our area”.

Commenting on the visit Steve Campbell, Head of Services for North Wales said:

“We were delighted to welcome Gareth to one of our supported housing projects in Rhyl to see the vital work that we do in the area. It was great to hear about Gareth’s experience in clinical services in North Wales, which gave us reassurance that he would appreciate some of the complex challenges that our clients have faced, and continue to face, during the pandemic.”

“At Adferiad Recovery, we are committed to supporting our clients to increase their sense of wellbeing and stability, whilst helping people that use our services to work towards living a rewarding and independent life in recovery.”

“It was great to discuss the work that we do in Denbighshire and some of the challenges that our clients face. One of those issues discussed was regarding the lack of quality affordable housing for the people that use or services to move on to when they leave us. We were very pleased to discuss our new initiative in Rhyl that will bring two, recently purchased, long-term empty properties back in to the social housing stock. These properties will provide quality, affordable housing for people to move in to and will also provide volunteering and job opportunities to some of our clients during the renovation works, which will be completed in partnership with local contractors. This initiative has been very kindly supported by the Town Centre Loan Scheme, which we are very grateful for.”
