On the 20th April, Gareth Davies MS for the Vale of Clwyd shadowed a shift with PCSO Steve Jeacock-Morris in Rhyl in order to gain a better insight into the work of PCSOs and the efforts they put in to promoting community safety.
During the morning briefing at the station, Gareth was pleased to learn that PCSOs are often in contact with local councillors from wards across Rhyl to keep up to date with local issues and concerns from residents. As a former County Councillor himself, he was pleased that PCSOs continue to keep in contact with local representatives which helps in keeping residents safe.
Whilst on the beat, Gareth attended a school patrol during rush hour at Christchurch CP School and was informed that they often attend schools at peak times to address regular issues such as parents parking dangerously in order to increase public safety. As well as engaging with concerns of parents and local residents, the school also has a 'mini police' scheme. This initiative gives children a chance to engage in local policing and be aware of local issues impacting them and their community.
As the school rush ended, Gareth shadowed a patrol along Rhyl High Street, West Parade. During this patrol, Gareth had an opportunity to hear how PCSOs view their role and what they do to prevent crime and work with local residents. Gareth was glad to hear that PCSOs get involved in burglary and theft cases which helps them build a productive relationship with victims of crime and the general public in dealing with community based issues. Commenting, Gareth said:
''PCSOs provide a visible policing presence for local residents in areas which unfortunately have high rates of community based issues, such as anti-social behaviour which impact everyone in that area. My day with dedicated PCSOs show that they are vital to aiding in reducing crime and do more than many would expect''.
''I would like to thank North Wales Police and PCSO Steve Jeacock-Morris for bringing me on the beat and giving me first hand insight into the work of PCSOs''.
