On 12th January, Gareth Davies MS attended the showcase of the Storm in a Teacup community café, nested within the Ffordd Las Community Centre in Rhyl. Storm in a Teacup was set up by Emma Elliott and her mother, Margaret, as a safe space tearoom for the community with some funding from the Rhyl Coastal Partnership (RCP), Windfarm, and the National Lottery Fund. Cllr Brian Jones assisted Emma in finding the location for the café within the Ffordd Lass Community Centre.
The debut ‘Showcase & Sugar Hit’ event was attended by member of parliament for the Vale, Dr James Davies MP and Rhyl Deputy Mayor, Cllr Cheryl Williams, and Cllr Brian Jones.
The café will run several positive schemes aimed at improving personal and social well-being, including ‘Chatter and Natter’ tables to tackle social isolation and loneliness and a Pay It Forward scheme to encourage charitable giving to those in need.
Opening the café, Emma told attendees of her ambition to create a space that can be a source of sanctuary and social support for the community, and ‘delivers cost quality at Greggs prices’. Teaming up with local artisan community baker, Use Your Loaf, Storm in A Teacup will offer baked goods and bread supplied by them amongst a delicious menu of assorted beverages and food choices.
Commenting on the event, Gareth said:
“I was delighted to attend the opening of Storm in a Teacup. The café is marvellous, supplying great quality affordable drinks and baked goods alongside a generous helping of social responsibility, providing a ‘safe space’ for community, and combatting loneliness and isolation.”
“Emma’s commitment to the community is truly commendable, having already undertaken voluntary work with the Big Help Project and to support others in women’s centres. She is the ideal person to be running this café, therefore, and her work to make this space a reality is a huge credit to her personal tenacity and character. I wish her and her mother all the best with this endeavour”
Storm in a Teacup will be open Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm from January 22nd.
