Senedd member for Vale of Clwyd, Gareth Davies, has responded to a Freedom of Information request submitted by his office revealing that the Glan Clwyd Hospital, the second biggest hospital in North Wales after Wrexham Maelor Hospital, is still performing fewer surgical procedures than it did prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The total number of all surgical procedures performed at Glan Clwyd Hospital has been slowly creeping upwards following the pandemic, but the figure from 2023 is still lower than the figure from 2019.
Responding to an FOI that has revealed Ysbyty Glan Clwyd has performed fewer surgical procedures each year between 2020 – 2023 than it did prior to the pandemic despite mounting backlogs, Senedd member for Vale of Clwyd, Gareth Davies MS said:
“I am staggered that fewer surgeries are taking place at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd now than they were before the pandemic despite rapidly mounting backlogs of patients waiting for treatment.
“We are close to marking 5 years since the beginning of the pandemic yet operating theatres in North Wales are still not functioning at capacity, allowing waiting times to soar.
“The First Minister needs to get her act together quickly and provide an explanation as to why surgeries are not increasing to cut down the backlog.”
