Gareth Davies MS for the Vale of Clwyd was pleased to visit Sanford Came home in Prestatyn.
During the visit, Gareth discussed the pressing issues facing social care in Wales and was able to see firsthand the impact they are having on staff. Flu cases, cost of living pressures and recruitment and retention are all having an impact on the care sector, which is an industry already under pressure.
With the Welsh NHS in crisis, Gareth was concerned to hear that patients being discharged from hospitals into care homes is quickly becoming a large issue. Additionally, he once again heard serious concern over the overuse of agency staff in care homes as they are not enough to cope with increasing demands.
During the visit, Gareth said ''Across Wales, care homes are seeing ever increasing pressures and the Welsh Government need to make tackling these problems a priority. One of the most concerning problems is the lack of recruitment and retention of staff which is due to a poor reputation of the sector in terms of pay, hours and job satisfaction''.
''If the Welsh Government does not address the immediate problems of recruitment and retention, I worry that the care sector will not see major improvements at a time when it is most needed''.
